Interview Method Man

Check out the interview with Method Man, published by Anette on March 24, 2010 in earcandy.dk. First part is in Danish, but the interview is in English.

Tirsdag d. 23.03 leverer legendariske Method Man en fuldkommen perfekt liveoptræden på Train, Århus. Koncerten varer ikke mere end en times tid, men Method Man formår på den korte tid alligevel fuldstændig at tryllebinde hen ved fem hundrede dedikerede Wu-fans. Aldrig før har jeg set en rapper med så god kontakt til sit publikum.

Flowmæssigt er der få (måske bare en håndfuld) rappere, der når Method Man. Det demonstrerer han fint med live-versioner af aller-greatest hits som ”Bring the Pain” og ”Tical,” endda et par Wu-Tang klassikere af ældre dato og senere en glimrende ODB hyldest-medley, der hverken er klæbrig eller sentimental. Like whoa.

Tændte blunts sendes rundt til de særligt priviligerede forreste publikummer, mens Method Man forsikrer alle om, at de ikke indeholder tobak, for det er naturligvis ikke hans intention at trodse spillestedets forbud mod cigaretrøg. Smart træk og in your face, Damon Albarn.

Earcandy: What’s the best thing about being a famous rapper?

Method Man: Money. Uhm.. a lot of free stuff. A lot of free stuff, yes.

Earcandy: What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever woken up?

MM: Uhm.. shit. I woke up underneath a car ’cause I got knocked out a couple of times in a fight. I got jumped by a bunch of guys and I got knocked out. When I came to, I was underneath a car [griner].

Earcandy: You’ve done some great collaborations. What’s your approach when you do a track with another rapper?

MM: To tear his fuckin’ head off! Yes sir, on his own shit. It’s like a battle without being a battle. You respect him, he respects you, but it’s still like a battle.

Earcandy: You had a great battle with Notorious B.I.G.

MM: That was my man! And we both wrote our verses in the studio, right there.

Earcandy: It’s an incredible song.

MM: Thank you, thank you.

Earcandy: You’ve done some great acting in “The Wire”. On “Mean Streets” on the new Raekwon album, Ghostface calls the show some bullshit. Would you say “The Wire” is a true depiction of the streets?

MM: It’s as true as it can get for television. There are some things you just can’t put in there, and there are other things that you have to use that are old Hollywood techniques in order to sell it to a broad audience. But they kept it more on the street-side without too much of the Hollywood shit and that’s why they didn’t win any awards. This is what I’m figuring.

Earcandy: It was too raw?

MM: They wouldn’t play by the Hollywood rules and therefore you don’t get any awards. As far as Ghost sayin’ “The Wire” is bullshit, he hatin’. He’s a hater [griner]!

Earcandy: “How High” has to be one of the funniest movies we’ve ever seen. We’d like to know, what’s the funniest movie you’ve seen?

MM: Uhm.. right now, for me, it’s “Black Dynamite” with Michael Jai White. Funny as hell. I love that movie.

Earcandy: Cool, we’ll have to check that out. We have a multiple choice quiz for you. We mention two alternatives and you have to choose one.

MM: Okay.

Earcandy: “The Hurt Locker” or “Avatar”?

MM: I hated ‘em both [griner]. I’ll go with “The Hurt Locker”.

Earcandy: Public Enemy or Barack Obama?

MM: [pause] Barack.

Earcandy: Robert De Niro or Al Pacino?

MM: [pause] Uhm, I love both of ‘em.. De Niro. De Niro.

Earcandy: Michael Jackson or Prince?

MM: Michael. Michael! Yes!

Earcandy: “Star Wars” or “Lord of the Rings”?

MM: Since I did a movie with George Lucas, I’m gonna go with “Star Wars” even though “Lord of the Rings” is better [griner].

Earcandy: Rick James or James Brown?

MM: Arghh, Rick! Superfreak!

Earcandy: “Illmatic” or “Reasonable Doubt”?

MM: Damn.. I’ll say “Illmatic” because nobody had heard anything like that before it came out.

Earcandy: Because you did so well with the multiple choice quiz, we have two bonus questions for you.

MM: Okay [griner].

Earcandy: Do you think your music needs more auto-tone?

MM: Noooo! No, but I like some of the auto-tune stuff. Some of it is good.

Earcandy: Can you give an example of a good song with auto-tune?

MM: Uhm.. that Drake song, what’s that.. [synger] “Baby, you my angel, you my everything, you the best… baby, you the best”. That’s it! I like that shit with auto-tune. T-Pain – “Buy You a Drank”. I like that one too. “Bartender” though, that shit was annoying. That’s because it came later on. “Buy You a Drank” was still like.. you know what I’m sayin’.

Earcandy: Alright, last question. When do you think 50 Cent will actually self-destruct?

MM: I hope never. I love 50.
